Council crews stop at the kerbside. Here is what to do when nobody in the house can move a sofa: assisted collections, charities and private crews.
The sentence that catches most people out sits halfway down every council booking page: items must be placed at the kerbside or property boundary before collection day. Crews are not insured to enter your home, and most will not step past the doorstep. If you live alone, are older, have a bad back or just have a wardrobe on the third floor, that one line is the whole problem.
Option 1: your council's assisted collection
Most councils run an assisted or "help with placing out" scheme for residents who are older or disabled and have nobody in the household who can move the items. It usually needs a phone call rather than the online form, sometimes a short assessment, and it is generally limited to moving items from just inside the property, not carrying a bed down two flights. Option 2: a charity crew, if the item is good
