What is a council bulky waste collection?

Every UK council offers (or funds) a service to collect large household items that do not fit in your wheelie bin: sofas, mattresses, wardrobes, fridges, washing machines and similar. You book, put the items out (usually at the kerbside or boundary of your property), and a crew collects on a set day.
