The routes that work
- Council bulky collection. Every UK council takes mattresses. Most count a mattress and its bed frame as two items, which matters under "up to 3 items" pricing. Verified prices are on each council's page here.
- Retailer take-back on the new one. Most bed retailers collect your old mattress when delivering the new one for a fee that is usually less than a private collection and sometimes less than the council. Book it at purchase; it is rarely offered afterwards.
- Charity, only if genuinely clean. A mattress must be unstained, undamaged and carry its fire label for any charity to accept it. Be honest with yourself here; charities dispose of thousands of unusable donated mattresses at their own cost.
- Recycling centre. Free if you can transport it. Roof bars and a mattress bag (a few pounds online) make this feasible for more people than expect it.
Getting it out of the house
A double mattress weighs 25 to 40kg and behaves like a drunk crowd-surfer on stairs.
